Still More Fiberal Sleeze and Conservative Duplicity

Well, there are two election items that grabbed my attention over recent days.  The first is that Sarmite (Sam) Bulte, the Fiberal MP for Parkdale - High Park (where I live four months of the year) has kicked up a mini-scandal of her own.  She is the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Heritage, and sat on the Heritage committee when it gave approval to a law that would have imposed U.S. style copyright regulations on Canada, as a number of industry groups were demanding.  And now, these same groups, for whom Bulte did a favour, are now holding a swanky, $250/plate, fundraiser at the Drake Hotel in Toronto.  This is pretty blatant, even for a Fiberal.  As a pretty elementary rule of ethics, you shouldn't take gifts from people you are in a position to do favours for.  Shame on you Ms. Bulte.  I guess she was feeling left out of the Fiberal corruption mania.

The Cons however, are no better.  They openly admit to supporting these same regulations, and Bev Oda, the Cons' Heritage critic has accepted donations from the same groups.  The Cons have also admited, as is being reported on CBC.ca, that they will raise taxes on the LOWEST income bracket immediately upon being elected.  They hike the rate from 15% to 16%, and to reduce the basic personal exemption by $400.  This move will cost a person making $20 000 per year $124 in extra taxes.  This really puts the lie to the Conservative claims that they stand for the interests of working people.  Why is it that they find it necessary to raise rates on the poorest of the poor while at the same time lowering tax rates on corporations and wealthy individuals?

The NDP is the only one whose tax proposals will actually help primarily the lowest tax bracket.  The NDP would lower the rate of taxation on the lowest bracket, increase the basic personal exemption and increase the child tax benefit.  All of these measures help working people most of all.

    Cheers,
